Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) to strengthen moral values (akhlakul karimah) among students at Madrasah Aliyah Tahfidz in Rokan Hulu Regency, Riau Province. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that PjBL was implemented through well-structured lesson planning, contextually relevant project execution, and intensive teacher guidance. Projects such as charity activities, environmental cleanliness programs, youth dakwah initiatives, and Qur’anic literacy practices significantly helped students understand and internalize moral values more meaningfully. Project-Based Learning not only increased student engagement but also strengthened values such as honesty, responsibility, discipline, cooperation, and social awareness. Furthermore, the implementation of PjBL allowed students to express creativity and integrate Qur’anic memorization with daily behavior. This study concludes that PjBL is an effective approach for character building in tahfidz-based Islamic schools and is recommended as a sustainable learning innovation to improve the quality of Islamic religious education.
