Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing students’ critical thinking skills in Islamic Religious Education at SMP Quranpreneur Indonesia Kalidoni Palembang. PBL was selected because it allows students to actively participate in problem-solving processes, engage in discussions, and construct knowledge through authentic and meaningful learning experiences. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that PBL significantly improves students’ learning engagement, as evidenced by their increased willingness to express opinions, ask questions, and analyze religious issues from logical and Islamic perspectives. Teachers serve as facilitators who guide students in identifying core problems, directing group discussions, and reinforcing concepts in alignment with Islamic teachings. Despite challenges such as limited instructional time, inadequate learning resources, and varying student abilities, PBL still provides substantial positive impacts on the development of students’ critical thinking skills. The study concludes that PBL is an effective model for Islamic Religious Education, promoting active learning, interactive classroom environments, and the development of higher-order thinking skills.
