Abstract

This study analyzes the role of visionary kiai leadership in developing the quality of modern Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) amid the challenges of educational transformation and global competitiveness. As the central figure in the pesantren, the kiai functions not only as a religious teacher and spiritual guide but also as a managerial leader who shapes institutional policies. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that visionary kiai leadership significantly contributes to strengthening integrated curricula, improving teacher competence, developing modern infrastructure, and integrating digital technology into teaching and administrative systems. The kiai formulates a clear long-term vision and mobilizes the entire pesantren community to participate in institutional improvement and innovation. Moreover, the kiai’s exemplary character—discipline, ethics, and commitment to quality—serves as strong motivation for teachers and students. The kiai’s extensive social and scholarly networks further enhance the pesantren through collaborations that support educational and infrastructural development. This study concludes that visionary leadership is a crucial factor in enabling pesantren to enhance institutional quality, maintain religious and cultural identity, and respond effectively to modern educational demands in a sustainable manner.
