Abstract

This study aims to determine the implementation of the active debate learning method in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) and its influence on improving students’ academic achievement at MTs Abqory . The background of this research stems from the low level of student participation and understanding in IRE classes, which are often dominated by one-way communication, where the teacher serves as the main source of information while students remain passive listeners. By applying the active debate method, students are expected to become more critical, communicative, and courageous in expressing their opinions based on their understanding of Islamic teachings, especially in the context of faith, morality, and worship values. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a field study approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews with Islamic education teachers, and documentation of students’ learning outcomes. The data analysis process involved data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the active debate learning method in IRE classes effectively enhances students’ learning motivation, strengthens their critical thinking abilities, and fosters self-confidence in expressing ideas. Furthermore, there was a significant improvement in learning evaluation results across cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. The Islamic education teacher plays a crucial role as a facilitator who guides the debate process while ensuring that it remains grounded in Islamic values and mutual respect for differing opinions. The conclusion of this study reveals that the active debate learning method is proven to be effective in improving students’ learning achievement in Islamic Religious Education at the elementary school level. This method creates a more dynamic, participative, and meaningful learning environment, thereby supporting the ultimate goal of Islamic education — nurturing students to become religiously devoted and morally upright individuals.
