Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the school principal’s management in improving student discipline and teacher performance at SDN 1 Mekarmulya, South Lampung, through the four management functions: planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling. The research employed a qualitative approach using interviews, observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.

The findings indicate that the planning function is carried out systematically and is aligned with the school’s vision, mission, and goals, which emphasize Islamic values, discipline building, and technological competence. Planning includes formulating disciplinary objectives, establishing violation guidelines and sanctions, and setting daily, weekly, and annual discipline activity schedules. In terms of organizing, the principal and school management establish a clear organizational structure through task distribution, a mentor–mentee system (senior–junior pairing), and a security unit that assists in supervising student discipline.

The actuating function is implemented through direction, motivation, exemplary leadership, effective communication, and the application of a point-based disciplinary system. Teachers and student supervisors not only enforce rules but also provide continuous guidance and motivation through routine activities such as khitobah, Friday night sholawat, and morning Qur’an recitation. Meanwhile, the controlling function is conducted directly through routine inspections, attendance checks, and activity monitoring, and indirectly through weekly, monthly, and annual evaluation reports. This system aligns with the Islamic concept of muhasabah, which emphasizes self-evaluation and continuous improvement.

Overall, the principal’s management practices have been effective and contribute positively to enhancing student discipline and improving teacher performance in character education at SDN 1 Mekarmulya, South Lampung.
