This study investigates the impact of social media on the increasing divorce rates among Muslim couples in Indonesia, viewed from various aspects and within the framework of the principle of Sadd al-Dzari‘ah. Social media has altered the dynamics of interaction and communication between spouses, often bringing negative effects such as jealousy and distrust, as well as opening opportunities for online infidelity. The phenomenon of comparing one’s household life with idealized portrayals on social media also creates dissatisfaction, which leads to conflict. Moreover, communication conducted through social media can result in misunderstandings due to the lack of context present in face-to-face communication.
From the perspective of Sadd al-Dzari‘ah, the use of social media, although permissible, may lead to mafsadah (harm) if not regulated wisely. Therefore, preventive measures are necessary, such as educating users on responsible social media use, applying transparency in interactions, and prioritizing direct communication. This study recommends that Muslim couples avoid sharing domestic problems on social media in order to protect their privacy. By applying these measures, the negative effects of social media on marital relationships can be minimized, in line with the objective of Sadd al-Dzari‘ah to prevent harm before it occurs.
