Abstract
The practice of usury in Indonesia has become a common phenomenon, particularly among retail traders who often face challenges in accessing formal financial resources. This practice significantly impacts the economic and social wellbeing of small business actors. Specifically, usurers impose highinterest rates that make it increasingly difficult to repay debts. In the context of Islamic economics, this practice not only risks harming individuals but also violates principles of justice and welfare. This study aims to explore how usury practices affect retail traders and to find alternative solutions to enhance their welfare within the framework of Islamic economics. Utilizing qualitative methods, this research involves interviews and case studies of retail traders trapped in the cycle of usury debts. Results indicate that the majority of traders experience a decline in quality of life and purchasing power, which negatively affects local economic growth. Hence, it is crucial to seek more sustainable solutions consistent with Sharia principles.
