Abstract

This research aims to explore the leadership role of school principals in realizing sustainable school autonomy in an Islamic education environment. Using an integrated qualitative and quantitative approach, data was collected through interviews, surveys, document analysis and case studies. Research findings show that understanding of the concept of school autonomy is still limited among Islamic education stakeholders, while the leadership role of school principals has a significant influence in facilitating the implementation of school autonomy. Challenges such as lack of understanding and leadership skills, resistance to change, and limited resources were also identified as barriers to achieving sustainable school autonomy. However, strategies such as increasing leadership training, forming inclusive school committees, and strengthening collaboration between schools can be a solution to overcome these challenges. The findings of this research provide a significant contribution in deepening understanding of the leadership role of school principals and the implementation of school autonomy in Islamic education environments, as well as providing guidance for the development of more effective educational policies and practices.
