Abstract

This study investigates interpersonal communication patterns between principals and teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Indralaya, Ogan Ilir Regency. This research uses a qualitative approach with a focus on case studies to understand in depth the dynamics of communication between school principals and teachers. The data collection method involved in-depth interviews with six school principals and twenty teachers, as well as direct observation in the school environment. The research results show that interpersonal communication patterns between school principals and teachers greatly influence the work climate and teacher performance. Open, responsive, and solution-oriented communication tends to create a harmonious and collaborative work environment, which in turn increases teacher motivation and performance. On the other hand, lack of communication, lack of clarity in direction, and unresponsiveness of the principal can cause tension and dissatisfaction among teaching staff. These findings highlight the importance of the principal's role in facilitating effective and supportive communication among school staff. The practical implications of this research emphasize the need for interpersonal communication training for school principals and teachers, as well as the expansion of formal and informal communication mechanisms in the school environment. Research supports a better understanding of the importance of interpersonal communication in increasing organizational effectiveness and creating a positive work climate in schools. However, future research could explore other factors that can influence interpersonal communication patterns, as well as their impact on teacher performance and student achievement more broadly.
