Abstract

Pondok Pesanteren is the forerunner of Islamic education institutions in Indonesia. The initial presence of pesanterns in Indonesia is estimated from 300-400 years ago that reached various circles of the Muslim community in Indonesia, especially in the Java area, so that the role of pesanterns in educational institutions is very vital for education in Indonesia in creating a nation with good character and personality. Islamic boarding school education which applies the religious curriculum system as its trademark, but when after the New Order era when economic growth really increased sharply, pesantren education was more structured and the Islamic boarding education system which was still using only the religious curriculum has now implemented general lessons using the curriculum double, the Mone curriculum and the Ministry of Religion curriculum, as an Islamic boarding school education institution has great attention and concern for the science of religion (tafaqquh fi al-din), and the formation of characters with good moral character. The existence of Islamic boarding schools is a good thing which can help the government in improving the quality of education in Indonesia and creating a national foundation in an effort to form a nation with good character and personality.
