Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of local culture on students' understanding of Islamic teachings at MTs Miftahul Jannah, Bangkunat, Pesisir Barat. Local culture plays a crucial role in shaping students' thoughts, values, and attitudes toward Islamic teachings. However, the extent to which local culture affects their understanding remains a question that needs further investigation. This study employs a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers, students, and local community leaders. The findings reveal that the local culture in Pesisir Barat significantly influences students' understanding of Islamic teachings, both positively and negatively. On the one hand, local culture strengthens Islamic values through preserved religious traditions such as regular Quranic study sessions, celebrations of Islamic holidays, and communal cooperation in religious activities. On the other hand, certain cultural elements are less aligned with Islamic teachings, such as beliefs in certain myths and traditional practices mixed with local beliefs. This study concludes that students' understanding of Islamic teachings is influenced not only by formal education in schools but also by the cultural environment in which they live. Therefore, a more contextual educational approach is needed, where teachers can integrate Islamic values with local culture more harmoniously. In this way, students can understand and practice Islamic teachings without losing their cultural identity.
