Abstract

The existence of the retail business today cannot be dammed along with changes in people's thoughts and consumption behavior. The birth of a retail company is influenced by a modern lifestyle that adheres to hedonism. Now its existence is feared to affect the role of traditional markets in people's lives. However, the existence of traditional markets cannot be ruled out in supporting the economy of the lower middle class. But it turns out that the existence of a retail business affects the income of traditional market traders. After the retail business, the income of traders will decrease or decrease. If it is not balanced with better service and management, it is possible that traditional markets will slowly die. Based on this reality, the formulation of the problem in this research is how is traditional business competition with retail business in Kauman Kotagajah? Based on data analysis, it can be concluded that first, the current condition of traditional markets is threatened by the existence of Alfamart and Indomart, because people prefer to retail, which provides all kinds of needs in one place with friendly and pleasant service. Second, in order to be able to compete with traditional retail businesses, it must be re-conceptualized so that they can become a balanced competitor. Among them must be able to treat consumers well, namely by (1) Providing the best quality products. (2) Give a fair price.
