Abstract

Effective communication between teachers and students is crucial in the context of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) classrooms. This study explores the dynamics of communication between teachers and students in IRE classes from the perspective of social interaction. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through classroom observations and interviews with IRE teachers and students. The findings reveal a variety of communication styles employed by teachers, ranging from authoritarian to collaborative approaches. Some classrooms exhibit active and open interactions where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in discussions, while others display more formal interactions with limited student participation. Additionally, the study highlights the impact of classroom environment factors such as class size, room layout, and learning equipment on communication dynamics. Smaller classes tend to create a more intimate environment conducive to personal interaction between teachers and students. Furthermore, student participation in communication is influenced by factors including self-confidence, interest in the subject, and perceptions of their relationship with the teacher. Students who feel comfortable and confident are more likely to actively engage in communication with both the teacher and their peers. The implications of this study underscore the importance of effective communication dynamics in IRE classrooms. Teachers need to be flexible in their communication styles, recognizing the individual needs and preferences of students, and creating a supportive classroom environment that encourages student participation. Practical implications include the development of inclusive and interactive teaching practices to enhance student engagement and understanding of Islamic teachings. By attending to the findings of this research, educators can improve the quality of IRE instruction, fostering deeper comprehension and appreciation of Islamic principles among students.
